AMerican Express Lets Twitter Users Shop Via Tweet

February 18, 2013

American Express' new AmEx Sync service lets cardholders buy items on Twitter by including special hashtags in their tweets.

American Express’ new AmEx Sync service lets cardholders buy items on Twitter by including special hashtags in their tweets. It currently allows users to purchase discounted AmEx gift cards and will be expanded to include physical products from Amazon, Sony, Urban Zen, and Microsoft’s Xbox business.

Cardholders sync their eligible cards to Twitter by adding a billing/shipping address online, which lets them send specialized tweets when they wish to buy an item. The system sends users a confirmation tweet within 15 minutes that users must retweet, and then the item will ship to the address on file. Offers from retailers will be available throughout the year, with AmEx’s Shari Forman noting “we want to ensure long-term, sustainable value for cardmembers who sync.” AmEx Sync builds on the company’s Card Sync service, which offers couponless savings to AmEx cardholders who tweet special-offer hashtags. The Card Sync integration could eventually be extended to other social networks besides Twitter, AmEx says.
