There are certain industries that lend themselves to ecommerce gateways. For instance, it is easy for many clothing retailers to sell their wares via online credit card terminals, because they can often offer more choices in inventory than can be stocked on shelves.

Some sporting goods experts aren’t as confident about the ability for bicycle shop owners to survive in an increasingly internet-focused marketplace. According to The Age, many of these types of stores have closed their brick-and-mortar locations in favor of virtual payment gateways. The source said that any bike part or accessory can be found online, so many shop owners are directing their efforts online to keep up with the competition.

However, the news outlet recommended that, if possible, these businesses should not close their brick-and-mortar locations because there are elements to the selling process that can’t be replaced over the internet. For instance, customer loyalty is more easily established on a face-to-face basis, because employees can better share product knowledge.

Despite the push online, experts don’t think that physical retail locations will be completely eliminated any time soon. However, to ensure this doesn’t happen, entrepreneurs might want to sweeten the deal somewhat, such as by offering optimal customer service and care in-store.
