According to a comScore survey released in December 2012, consumers spent more online during the 2012 holiday season than in years past. There was a 16 percent increase in online shopping between 2011 and 2012, as $38.7 billion was spent via internet payment processing gateways last year.

As such, ZDNet reported that numerous experts think this signals the end of the traditional experience.
