MasterCard recently announced plans to expand its QkR mobile payments service. Developed by QkR MasterCard Labs, the service is offered to users through the QkR mobile app, available for both Android and Apple devices. The service uses quick response codes displayed on a smartphone or other mobile device’s screen to enable contactless payments at physical retail outlets.
MasterCard has been demonstrating the service at several locations this year, including New York City’s Yankee Stadium, where users have been able to use the QkR app to pay for concessions since earlier this year. Similar pilot programs have been launched at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland, and the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney, Australia. MasterCard also is demonstrating QkR at La Premier movie theaters locations in Sydney. MasterCard says it wants to use QR codes to make payments convenient, interactive, and engaging.
