People have been using their smartphones as digital wallets for years now and in some cases, local governments have been installing a mobile credit card terminal in many spots to accept payments for parking.

In Salt Lake City, Utah, drivers will soon be able to pay for parking through their mobile devices by downloading an application. The Deseret News reports that although officials in the transportation department are just in the testing stage, the new parking payment system is expected to be implemented in the near future.

In an interview with the news source, Salt Lake City’s transportation director Robin Hutcheson said that users would not see any added costs when they used their mobile devices.

“You are not paying any more to pay by phone,” said Hutcheson said in an interview with the newspaper. ” “If you don’t have a smart phone, there’s a text application that will work that will allow you to pay by (other phones) as well.”

According to a study by Juniper Research the mobile payment industry is expected to make enormous progress over the next few years. By 2017, researchers believe mobile payments will total $180 billion.
