One of the largest online shoe sellers in the country recently made headlines after it experienced a major data breach, exposing consumers’ credit card information and billing addresses.

In a blog posting, Zappos.com and sister site 6pm.com, said that while the last four digits of credit card numbers had been exposed[,] the critical credit card  payment information had not been compromised.

The blog, which appeared shortly after the hack took place, told customers that they would be given instructions to ensure that their information was once again secure.

“The most important focus for us right now is the safety and security of our customers’ information,” the site explains. “Within the next hour, we will begin the process of notifying the 24+ million customer accounts in our database about the incident and help step them through the process of choosing a new password for their accounts. (We’ve already reset and expired their existing passwords.)”

Other major breaches have taken place in recent weeks, highlighting the importance of PCI compliance. The Associated Press reported that Saudi hackers exposed as many as 400,000 Israeli credit card numbers.
